The book is well written organized and informational.
I have been exploring a yoga practice since I was 17 and stumbled across my mom's VHS copy of Raquel Welch doing what I later learned is the Bikram series (sans heat, which I strongly recommend). Almost 30 years later, I am still exploring and yoga never ceases to amaze me. My fascination with the practice, and desire to experience many different "forms" led me to take Kundalini yoga teacher training and to this day I rotate between that, Ashtanga (and the wonderful variation on that theme which is presented by Bryan Kest) and Bikram (practiced at home). Part of me admires people who can choose one path and walk it with utter devotion without meandering off to explore other areas because I am not that gal. My body loves to experience so many different things and each type of yoga I have embraced has brought with it some unique and beautiful lessons and healing.Like most yoga-nuts, I am familiar with Kino and have watched her videos on Youtube, which offer quick and powerful tips on various postures, many of which changed my entire approach and experience of something I had been doing for decades, so I already know what a remarkable teacher she is. What surprises and delights me in this book is what a lovely writer she is as well. Her deep love and abiding passion for the practice comes through loud and clear, dripping from every well-chosen word. This book is a gorgeous companion to ANY yoga practice, regardless of sequence or form. It is inspiring, informative and offers physical modifications and perspective which will benefit any style of practice. She offers up her own story, which gives us a glimpse into her connection to yoga and what it means, as well as invaluable information for even an advanced beginner or intermediate yogi (like breathing cues and drishtis). While the sneak peek inside of the book on amazon doesn't show this, there are tons of beautiful photos as well, making it very clear and helpful for someone exploring the Primary Series for the first time (or maybe someone who's rusty, ahem, or just loves the insight you receive when you open to a lot of teachers instead of just one or two). The book is so beautiful I wish they offered a hardcover edition with color photos inside, but even as-is I honestly feel that this book stands alongside "Light on Yoga", "Yoga Mala" and David Swenson's indispensable book in terms of content. Yes, it is that good. And I can tell you this...my practice has been FAR from consistent lately but reading this reminds me of just what my life and body are missing by skipping mat time and has compelled me to reconnect. I don't know of higher praise than that for a book about yoga.
Kino provides a balanced, deep introduction to yoga. Her book is a quality supplement to practice with a teacher, even if you are not currently an Ashtanga student. I've seen immediate improvement during guided Baptiste classes, simply from following the guidelines on breathing and drishti, covered in the first few chapters of the book. From my first read through, it is evident the book will have a permanent place in my library. I'll probably wear it out. Poses are presented with large, clear pictures. Descriptions are detailed, often filling several pages.A few things really stand out compared to other yoga books:1. Instructions are finely nuanced, without being repetitive or overwhelming. They include the drishti for each pose, as well as how to coordinate movement into the pose with your inhale and exhale.2. Careful attention has been paid to aligning written descriptions with the pictures, including left/right sides of the body.3. The book offers extensive discussion of modifications, along with steps required to build into the full expressions of poses.4. The spiritual side of yoga is presented in a very objective, factual manner. No corny catch phrases or hokey promises.Kino has done an incredible job capturing her years of experience teaching others. As a relative novice to Ashtanga, I did find piecing the book together into a home practice a little challenging. Questions come up like:1. How many times do I repeat Sun A / Sun B at the start of the practice? I've opted for 5 each.2. How far into the standing series do I go on day 1? I've opted to just try the whole thing.3. When is the closing series introduced into my practice? For now I've chosen to skip the seated series, do back bending, and then go for the full closing series.4. When do vinyasas fit in between the postures? This can be figured out on a per pose basis, by reading the detailed text descriptions, but it's difficult to refer to during a practice session. This is minor stuff. I'll resolve it when I get to work with an Ashtanga teacher later this month. I think annotation of the primary series pictorial at the end of the book with stuff like "repeat 5x", do vinysasa, hold for X breaths, use thumbs as drishti, "gateway posture", etc. would resolve this. I'll probably do that in my own copy of the book as I learn more. Two more points:1. The book has highlighted some glaring shortcomings in my existing practice. I was blissfully ignorant, now I have so much work ahead of me.2. The pictures are really well done. They deserve to be in full color, and even bigger - like a hard cover coffee table book. I'd get it for sure.Overall, one of the few must-buy yoga books.
This book is nothing short of amazing! I've been personally practicing different types of yoga since 2013, and teaching since 2016, and out of all the book I've bought on the topic of yoga, this is by far the best one I own. Kino goes into great detail about each pose of the Ashtanga series, step by step with variations that make it accessible to anyone wanting to learn this ancient practice. Kino even discusses discomfort that you may have in poses, and which is okay to experience (IE discomfort along the muscle vs the muscles attaching at a joint or the joint itself). Its beautifully written with short background explanation of Ashtanga and its history at the beggining of the book, and most importantly, what makes yoga, yoga! I had the pleasure of meeting Kino at backbend and hip opener workshop she did earlier this year and even got my book signed! She was a real pleasure to meet in person and I look forward to reading her second book on Ashtanga yoga!
Kino MacGregor is one of my yoga (s)heroes. She goes beyond the popular trend of promoting impressive feats of flexibility and discusses the philosophical and spiritual aspects of a yoga practice. If you're interested in yoga but feel intimidated by the pictures you see of seemingly impossible contortions, or if you're a yoga practitioner who is looking to move beyond the aerobics and into a more devotional practice, check out Kino's book! Her writing is refreshingly accessible, though it's always a challenge to write descriptions of physical postures. Kino has a number of YouTube videos, though, for further instruction
